My visual response to The Nesting by Lisa Gordon is done in collage on paper. It is framed in a wooden colored shadow box as some of my papers are thick, almost sculptural.
The background of the scene is a kitchen with white lower cabinets, a sink in the center, and wooden floating shelves with a shiny edge by each side with dishes one them. To the left of the sink in the corner is a women with wild curly brown hair – she is made with my shredded hand made-paper in a light skin color. She is dressed in a aqua colored tunic with white lines that curve. She has a green striped coffee cup in one hand and blue Macaw bird in the other, there is a cardinal flying just above her head. Another bird, a parrot with an orange head and yellow and green body behind her coffee cup. There is a Turkey in front of her feet along side two pigeons. All the birds are made from my hand-made paper, so the shredded papers look like their feathers. Splashing water, blue paint, out of the white farm sink is a loon! The faucet is a piece of wire so it appears to be a faucet. Out the window you see trees in the distance. On the right side is another woman made with dark brown paper skin and black hair, that snakes down her back in several strands; she is wearing light purple and black tunic that appears to be tie-dyed, she has both her hands raised in exclamation! Above her head, is a yellow Cockatoo and a Bluebird flying above.

I wanted this piece to reflect the craziness of having many birds in one’s home. I was inspired by this writing as I have several bird feeders in my yard.
